How it works

How your Health Score is calculated

Your Health Score runs from 0 to 100 and combines four measures, weighted by how well each one predicts health risk. Waist-based measures count most because they show where you carry fat, which your weight alone can't.

  • 35%Waist-to-height ratio
  • 30%Body fat
  • 20%Waist size
  • 15%BMI

Each measure scores 100 in the healthy range, 55 in the pay-attention range and 15 in the change-needed range, then the four are weighted and added. When your waist and lean mass show a muscular build, BMI is set aside so it can't count muscle as risk.

The 10 results, and where each range comes from

Waist-to-height ratio Healthy: 0.40 to 0.49
Your waist divided by your height. Keeping your waist under half your height is the UK NICE guideline for lower risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. From 0.5 risk rises; 0.6 or more is high.
Body fat (estimate) Healthy: depends on age and sex
Relative Fat Mass (Woolcott and Bergman, 2018), a formula from your height and waist that was validated against DXA scans. Healthy ranges by age and sex come from Gallagher et al. (2000): men 8 to 19% under 40, 11 to 21% at 40 to 59, 13 to 24% at 60 and over; women 21 to 32%, 23 to 33% and 24 to 35%.
Waist size Low risk: men under 94 cm (37 in), women under 80 cm (31.5 in)
Cut-offs used by Health Canada, Obesity Canada and the World Health Organization. High risk starts at 102 cm (40.2 in) for men and 88 cm (34.6 in) for women.
BMI Healthy: 18.5 to 24.9
Weight divided by height squared. Useful for populations, but it can't tell muscle from fat, which is why it counts least in your score.
Healthy weight for your height
The weight range that gives you a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height.
Target waist
Half your height, the line where waist-to-height risk starts to rise.
Fat mass and lean mass
Your body weight split into fat and everything else, using your body fat estimate.
Muscle level (estimate)
Fat-free mass index: your lean mass for your height, adjusted to a standard height and compared with typical adults (Kouri et al., 1995).
Daily calories
Your resting calories from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), multiplied by your activity level. The fat-loss target is about 20% below that, never below your resting calories. Protein is 1 g per lb (2.2 g per kg) of your target weight, the upper end of the range research supports for building and keeping muscle (Morton et al., 2018).
How you compare to Canadians your age
Measured waist and BMI data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Health Measures Survey, 2022 to 2024.

What is a Health Score?

A Health Score is a 0 to 100 rating of your body composition risk, built from four measurements: waist-to-height ratio, body fat, waist size and BMI. It takes about 2 minutes, runs on your phone and is free. Higher is better, and 100 means all four are in the healthy range.

How is the Health Score calculated?

Each of the four measures scores 100 in the healthy range, 55 in the pay-attention range and 15 in the change-needed range. They're then weighted: waist-to-height ratio 35%, body fat 30%, waist size 20% and BMI 15%. Waist-based measures count most because they predict health risk better than weight alone.

Where exactly should I measure my waist?

Just above the top of your hip bones, standing relaxed, after a normal breath out. Keep the tape level and snug without pressing into the skin. That's the spot the body fat formula was built on, so measuring at your belly button or using your pants size can skew your results.

What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?

Under 0.5, which means your waist is less than half your height. The healthy range is 0.40 to 0.49. From 0.5 the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes starts to rise, and 0.6 or more is considered high.

How accurate is the body fat estimate?

It's a well-validated estimate, not a measurement. Relative Fat Mass was developed against DXA scans, the clinical reference method, and estimates body fat more accurately than BMI. Your free assessment measures you with a 3D body scan for a more detailed picture.

Is BMI accurate if I'm muscular?

Not always. BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so muscular people often read as overweight. That's why BMI counts least in your Health Score, and why the calculator sets BMI aside when your waist and lean mass point to a muscular build.

What happens at the free assessment?

A Klub 20 coach takes proper measurements, including a 3D body scan, goes through your Health Score with you and shows you what to focus on first. It's free for members and non-members. After you ask for your report, we call you to book a time.
